JUNE 2013
In June, our Monarchs Across Georgia Pollinator Bed was finished. There are signs in the garden to help explain what pollinators are and why we need them. We will also be reading books and talking about life in the Quiet Reading Garden, the vegetable gardens, and the outdoor classroom with each class this year.
The garden has been a busy place this summer! The flowers are all growing and blooming, and the butterflies and the bees have seemed very happy to have so many places to get food. The vegetables and herbs have been growing this summer, too. We have had tomatoes, peppers, basil, radishes, onions, lettuce, parsley and a watermelon! The Kindergarten Camp in June made and tasted a HUGE salad from the garden. Some kindergarteners discovered vegetables they didn’t know they liked. Two families have been helping water and harvest this summer. Here are pictures of some of their harvest.

Brandon, our intern from Captain Planet Foundation, has worked hard in the garden, watering, weeding, and planting. He has started a Three Sisters Garden for us in one of the raised beds. He has also started some vegetable gardens in some unusual places—reusable tote bags, plastic bins, and discarded wooden pallets. Brandon’s unusual gardens show how easy it is to reuse and recycle, and grow a garden even if you don’t have a farm or a big yard. You can see in the pictures how much the sweet potatoes have grown in their tote bag and rubber bin garden beds!
